Taking Stock

So far, we have examined the influence of a set of core personality characteristics on general leadership ability. When it comes to assessing personality characteristics through the lens of leadership potential, there can be benefits for either extreme on a dimension, and there can also be benefits to being in the middle. However, it can be particularly difficult to be an effective leader if you are operating at the extreme poles of emotional instability or narcissism.

Yet personality characteristics do not completely determine your behavior. Instead, they help create a set of habits that influence much of your leadership behavior. In Part III of this book, I provide methods for improving your leadership habits in light of your personality characteristics.

Before turning to that section, though, it is valuable to look at the interaction of personality characteristics and leadership in the setting of innovation and creative problem solving. There are two reasons for this exploration. First, many of the personality dimensions I have discussed so far are important for leading innovative teams. Second, a discussion of personality and leadership within a setting of innovation and creativity provides a model that you can apply to other settings you encounter.
